Rik and Melissa Obiso grew up in rural Sussex County, New Jersey and fell in love with Southwest Virginia when they attended Virginia Tech. When they left “Hokie Land” they did not think that their winery dreams would come true 10 years later.
Since leaving Blacksburg in 1997, the Obiso’s have lived and worked in New Mexico, Tennessee, and Maryland. By 2006, the draw of the mountains of Southwest Virginia, the pursuit of getting out of corporate America, as well as the desire to raise their children in an area where family values still have meaning, the Obiso’s packed up and moved back to the New River Valley.
The idea of owning a winery is not new to the Obiso’s; they have been making wine and studying the wine business for years. Wine apparently runs in the Obiso family. Rik’s great grandfather (Peter) and grandfather (Sam) made wine in Sicily. Rik’s grandfather continued the tradition when he came to New York, where he invented several formulations for wine, fermented beverages, and distilled infusion spirits until the mid 1950’s.
Over the past 5 years, Attimo has grown from a small patch of “test vines” to a large vineyard and tasting room. Vines have been planted every year, beginning in 2007, and continuing until 2011, with many of our vines bearing fruit in 2010 & 2011. There are now over 10,000 vines on the property & 1,200 raspberry and blackberry plants.
Rik & Melissa live on the property with their sons, two Border Collies, and two cats. They love owning a winery, and working hard to create their dream. You are invited to come out to see the farm and enjoy the atmosphere. And while you are here, introduce yourself: they would all love to meet you!
